Like Andover Borough, which separated from the township in 1904, the 20.1 square mile municipality was named for the English birthplace of Joseph Turner, a founder of the township. There are 14 lakes and ponds in the township, including Lake Lenape and Lake Iliff - once summer communities that now have many year-round residents. The former Aero flex Airport has become the 940 acre Kittatinny Valley State Park. The airport remains operational.
